Art around the Ngukurr School

The community of Ngukurr attracts artists and the school is a place where you can see the virtue of immersing children in art... and here it is art of place, art of country, art full of information.

This is a quick collection of photos of paintings on outside walls. It is an important context to the new mosaic garden... The garden is an extension of the artscape already in the school.

These paintings have been done in the last three years by school classes, under the direction of teacher Simon Normand.

Three-year-old Banjo provides some sense of scale, as do the ridges on the Colourbond walls.

Here are four seasons — with a chart of totems too...

I asked about the hand prints and hand carvings on these tiles:
"That was in the time when our parents were at school"

This is a painting of the community meeting hall, adjacent to government offices

This painting was a collaboration between Ngukurr girls and
girls from MLC Melbourne during their exchange visit in 2003
