About Us —

ACOKE RURAL DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVE (ARDI)

Acoke Rural Development Initiatives (ARDI) was established in late 2004 by three young and dynamic visionaries wanting to re-awaken war-affected children, youth and mothers in Northern Uganda — to play a proactive and practical role in society.

We need to educate and challenge young people to take part in initiatives that would be productive, rebuild hope and improve their livelihoods for a sustainable future.

We are still just emerging from a great night of poverty and loss, when the community came up so angry from war and violence, desperate to rebuild hope. We want to find a fundamental approach that involves young people as core and valuable partners in development. Youth, children and mothers affected by war had been aid recipients in programs and projects on pilot basis and we have been clients of existing components of various development organizations.

But we need to have control of our own lives and destinies, not just receive occasional welfare.

We saw an emerging demand for this community to be supported as proper partner in development and for us ourselves to take the leading role in addressing the challenges that still obstruct our full human development.

What happens when a community – desperate to re-build hope after 20 years in wars – has nothing to start with?

We are a collaboration amongst youths who share common values and goals, which range from economic stability, environmental issues, governance, social justice, gender, HIV/AIDS, leadership, education, children and youth involvement and advancement.

We recognize the negative impacts of 20 years LRA war on children, girls, youth and mothers and needs for active and full participation of youth through the employment of a multi-sectoral approach by engaging them to achieve and maintain sustainable income generating activities and skills development.

As ARDI, we endeavour with desperate desires to address these needs and demands through the provision of diversified services: income initiatives, information, education, communication and advocacy at all levels, most especially for war victims.

We re-affirm our commitment to be an exemplary poverty and ignorance eradication Community Non-Profit Organization in Uganda and the world — by taking note of the dynamics of children, mothers and youth in the society after suffering from this 20 years war of Northern Uganda.

We will also embrace/hold close good practices that are core in addressing children, youth and mothers needs.

Acoke Community has been so eager and desperate to change their life – with the support of online volunteers, NGOs, Individuals – after seeing the great negative impact of 20 years of war by the Lord's Resistance Army in northern Uganda. The group came up with a registered name as ACOKE RURAL DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVES (ARDI) which is a non profit Community Based Organization (CBO) registered and recognized by the government of The Republic of Uganda to operate in Lira district Northern Uganda. We believe that with time, capacity, experience and affiliations our CBO can run beyond this coverage.

Our mothers in camps — a lot of shea nut but no market for it. People just consume it locally or sell at a very cheap price to pay school fees and other basic needs from time to time because even rainfall is becoming very unreliable hence many still dies of hunger.
